General steps for window covering safety.

To ensure that Curtain and Blind cords and chains are out of reach for children and pets, follow these simple steps:

1. Check your Curtain and Blind cords.

Regularly inspect all cords, even while you’re on holiday. Look out for loose or looped cords wherever you stay, as pets and children can easily get tangled
Ensure there are no cords accessible from the floor or by climbing on furniture, as pets especially may try to chew or play with them
Secure all cords to keep them well out of reach of both children and pets, and remove any furniture or items that could be used to climb and reach cords

2. Secure loose cords so they are out of reach

Purchase cleats or tensioning devices from your nearest dollar curtains + blinds store
Use at least two screws to securely fix each device in a location that is out of reach to children and pets
Avoid using materials like double sided tape or glue to secure these devices, as they may fail under pressure
Some Blinds may not function properly without the loop, so consult a specialist before cutting the loop out of cords or chains, and attach to a tassel instead

3. Choose safe Curtains and Blinds

When purchasing new Curtains and Blinds, ensure they:

Have warning labels that highlight the potential dangers to children
Include a secure method for cords or chains, eliminating any loops or strands within a child or pets reach
Where possible, operate without exposed cords or chains

4. Keep children and pets away from cords and chains

Move any furniture or items a young child or a pet can sit, stand, or climb on, away from cords or chains. Even those tied to cleats, as they may be able to untie or reach them
Don’t leave your children or pets alone in a room with cords of chains within reach
